The Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq is the first constitutionally recognised autonomous region of the Kurds. In spite of problems of good governance, the autonomous region has become a source of inspiration for Kurds in other states and has a continuing symbolic and political influence on the historically rooted aspiration for autonomy of the Kurds as a whole.
